Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich

Modern War

I bought a book today entitled "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" in order to pass the time at work when I get graveyard shifts. This thing clocks in at a respectable 1250 pages, so it will take quite a while to get through. Anyway, there was a great quote in the forward of the book.

"In our new age of terrifying, lethal gadgets, which supplanted so swiftly the old one, the first great aggressive war, if it should come, will be launched by suicidal little madmen pressing an electronic button. Such a war will not last long and none will ever follow it. There will be no conquerers and no conquests, but only the charred bones of the dead on an uninhabited planet." -William L. Shirer

The gravity of the statement is not lost on me. He is absolutely right; any war between the major powers that be would result in a planet devoid of life. If the impact of thousands of warheads detonating didn't destroy the world, the radiation fallout and lack of food/pure water will. It's amazing to think that just 60 years ago war was a long, hard-fought ground battle costing many soldier's lives and trillions of dollars. It makes me wonder what will happen when countries with no money start selling their deadliest weapons to the highest bidders. Russia is a main concern, as they have been known to sell weapons and other equipment to insurgents and militia groups (whether or not they KNEW they were supplying radicals is up for debate in some cases). What happens if a genetically engineered virus or a nuclear warhead goes "missing"? That's not something you can just write off on an inventory report.

The end of the world might be soon or it might be a while, but one thing is certain. No matter how advanced we get, the need to blow something up and dominate people that think differently than we do will be the deciding factor in how the human race lives and dies; not old age, naturally occurring diseases, or disasters. The barrel of a proverbial gun that we have pointed at our own face will be the catalyst of our demise.

History is fun. And at the same time depressing. History doesn't repeat itself verbatim despite what many people say, but if we don't remember our previous actions similar situations will arise and we will have no reference on how to deal with them.

Reboot

This blog is getting a reboot. I've decided to keep it but all personal BS that I've been posting recently is getting washed out. From now on I'm using this thing to collect my thoughts/express my pleasure or displeasure on people, places and things. The personal junk is gonna stay with the councilor. This will probably disappear in a few posts, just a note to anyone that cares.

Music Mixer

I've thought a lot about my hobbies and how much they suck now that I look back. One of the most fascinating things to me is music. I haven't done anything but listen to it, even though I have the ear and rhythm to learn how to play any instrument I want and how I have ignored that gift for too long. I think it is time for me to switch my hobby priority around to making music and not just listening. I intend to post some audio clips eventually (I promise you won't need earplugs) once I learn how to incorporate what I want into FL Studio. The end result should prove at best "listen-able" and at worst highly amusing.

In other news I went and watched "The Spirit" last night. All I can say is Frank Miller knows what the hell he's doing. It was darkly comical, suspenseful, and Samuel L. Jackson did a TERRIFIC job as the Octopus. Also, Eva Mendez is probably one of the best looking women I have ever had the pleasure of seeing mostly naked. Her body is fucking AMAZING, and the scene that brought this corona-melting sight to the screen was very well done. Sin City is still my favorite Frank Miller movie but damn if this isn't a close second.

2009: God I hope it's better than last year

Last year was a pretty crappy one both for me and a lot of other people. At least Travolta got to spend one more Christmas with his kid, that story kinda sucked to hear (all the money in the world can't keep your loved ones safe, unfortunately).

I guess I'm not so much in a griping mood as a general "Well, lets get this new year kicked off already". A+ certification is an immediate goal, and long term is finishing up college. Being in retail again has given me a very serious wake-up call: finish what you started or you will be doing this crap for the rest of your life.

I've been thinking a lot about relationships and whether I would want one at this point in my life, and I can't say that I do. I have a lot of things to get in order first, least of which is another job. I'm pretty sure my pride wouldn't allow a girl to pay for all my meals and other stuff...now I would probably change my mind if I found 'the one' but at this point the focus is me.

One thing I've thought about a lot over the holiday break is religion. Bill Maher is a complete dick but his movie 'Religulous' raised so many good points its hard not to begrudgingly agree with him. In the end nobody really knows a damn thing, all we have to go on are what other people claim to have interpreted from 'god' himself. Why people like David Koresh and Tom Cruise are considered crazy for their beliefs but the Pope isn't is something that will always confuse me.

It's not that I don't believe in God, you can't really prove it either way with physical and scientific evidence. There are so many problems with organized religion though until I don't even understand how people can follow them. I sort of wonder myself if people would have believed Jack and the Beanstalk if it were swapped out with Noah putting 2 of every species on an ark the size of the local Walmart stacked twice that he built with 3 other people.

As crazy as it sounds, the movie Dogma had probably the best speech I've ever heard about religion, from Chris Rock no less.

"People do some crazy shit over beliefs...I think its just better to have ideas."

Anyway I hope everyone else's year gets off to a good start. The end of last year certainly was a downer (except the Presidential election, I'm glad he's hitting the ground running).
